Start With the Order of the List
Ingredient labels aren't random. In the U.S., the FDA requires cosmetic ingredients to be listed in descending order by concentration — meaning whatever is listed first makes up the largest percentage of the product, and so on down the line. Once you hit ingredients present at 1% or less, brands can list them in any order, so the back half of a label is less about ranking and more about a general inventory.
This one rule changes how you should read a bottle. If "water" or "aqua" is the first ingredient, that's completely normal — most bath products are water-based. But if a beautiful-sounding botanical oil is listed fifth from the bottom, after a page of synthetic thickeners and preservatives, it's probably there in a marketing amount, not a functional one. This is sometimes called "fairy dusting" — adding a trace of an appealing ingredient just so it can be featured on the front label, even though it's barely present in the formula.

But if you have eczema, rosacea, sensitive skin, or you simply prefer a gentler lather, look for milder alternatives like sodium cocoyl isethionate, decyl glucoside, or coco-glucoside — these clean effectively without the same stripping effect.
The takeaway: sulfate-free doesn't automatically mean better, and sulfate-containing doesn't automatically mean harsh. It depends on the specific sulfate, the concentration, and your own skin's tolerance.
The Trouble With "Clean" Claims
